Do rusted porcelain or cast iron bathtubs always need to be replaced?

Accepted Answer

No. Rusted bathtubs do not always need to be replaced. The important thing is knowing if the rust is cosmetic or structural. A rusty drain in a ceramic or porcelain bathtub can often be cleaned, treated, repaired, and refinished. A rusted out drain, however, is terminal and the tub will need to be replaced by a plumber.

What about rust in the floor of my tub? Can the tub be repaired?

That depends. Is the tub new and wet nails and screws dropped in the tub during construction left rust behind, or is the tub older and water and moisture underneath the tub has rusted it from the bottom up? Topical rust is easy to remove but rust from moisture underneath the tub cannot be stopped. You can repair and get more years out of an underside rusted tub, assuming the floor or drain are not rusted through, but eventually the rust will win and the tub will need to be replaced. Always caulk tubs and puddy drains to prevent moisture from getting underneath your tub.

We do not replace bathtubs. If we ever say "your tub needs to be replaced" it's because your tub is beyond repair, not because we have a financial interest in upselling a new tub or because we have an "arrangement" with a plumbing company. We inform, you decide.

Why is there a leaking crack in my fiberglass bathtub/shower?

With any fiberglass bathtub or shower there are three layers to consider: the floor (what you stand on to take a shower or bath), the wooden or composite subfloor (what's underneath supporting the shower or tub floor), and the foundation of your home or apartment. Leaking cracks in shower and tub floors occur when there is a gap between the foundation and subfloor.  Each time you step over that gap the shower or tub floor flexes and eventually causes the fiberglass to crack, which leaks into the wooden or composite subfloor, which weakens and leaks onto the foundation. Water from these leaks has to go somewhere and that's often onto first floor below or into a room next to the bathroom with the leaking shower or tub floor. We specialize in permanent structural repairs for these leaks!

When is the best time to repair a damaged bathtub in a new home?

Accepted Answer

The best time to repair a tub in a new home is between the final clean and the close. Repairing a chipped or damaged bathtub in a new home before the final clean is "begging" for it to get damaged somehow, someway by someone before the new owners move in. Almost every time we repair a bathtub or shower before the final clean, because the builder didn't want to wait, another trade working a punch list stood on it, stood in it, or straddled the tub with a ladder wrecking the repair we performed and caused new damage, even with a note taped to the tub reading "TUB REPAIR. PLEASE STAY OFF TUB." And yes it is a second charge. There's no "touching up" a wrecked tub repair. So if you can, wait until every trade is out of the house before calling in the tub guy. Once we're done, you'll never know the tub was damaged or that we were ever there.

What's wrong with total refinishing? Isn't that most of tub repair industry?

Accepted Answer

Most tub repair companies are actually bathtub painting companies, and yes they are sadly most of the tub "repair" industry. Totally refinished bathtubs tend to peel in a few years or months after being painted because there is too much paint over too much surface area as it is impossible to clean, sterilize, and properly prime every square inch of a bathtub so well that the paint will properly adhere to the tub. An area of a tub that's not properly cleaned will not be sterile enough to correctly prime. Improper priming results in bad adhesion and eventual peeling. Another major problem with total refinishing is water standing on the tub. After each shower or bath water pools in the corners of the tub and where the tub and tile or surround meet. Water sitting on the paint of a refinish bathtub will sooner than later cause peeling.

So if bathtub refinishing is a bad idea, what about refinishing the tile around a bathtub?

Accepted Answer

Don't do it. If you think a refinished bathtub will peel way sooner than expected, try refinish grouted or caulked tile. We've been called to apartment complexes where every tub and tile wall were refinished and peeling. The only advice we could offer was to contact the refinishing company to clean up their mess. Never let anyone totally refinish your tub, and especially never let anyone paint your tile.

We do not do countertops. That is a separate industry. Not countertop company should be doing tub repairs and no tub repair company should be doing countertops.

Why is my bathtub floor sagging and holding water?

Accepted Answer

We see this a lot in hotels and in some homes with older porcelain over steel bathtubs where water and moisture have gotten under the tub, rusted the underside, and caused the floor to sag from people simply standing in the tub. These can be repaired and made to look new. However, the sagging floor cannot be "unsagged".  Our suggestion to folks with these tubs, once we've repaired them, is to not let water sit on the tub floor after a shower or bath. Eventually, underside rust will destroy the tub but they can often be used for a number of years after repair.

Can scratches and gouges in an acrylic bathtub be repaired?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Acrylic is an excellent material to repair because it is thick resin over a fiberglass backing that,  most of the time, can be polished back to a better-than-factory finish without repair and refinishing. Unless, of course, the damage cuts through the acrylic surface and into the fiberglass backing. In this case we spot repair and refinish the damaged area(s) in a color matching the tub's factory finish.
